VATS pulmonary cyst and abscess resection is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove abnormal formations in the lung such as air-filled cysts or pus-filled abscesses. The surgery is performed using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery through small incisions in the chest wall, allowing direct visualization and precise removal of the lesion without a full thoracotomy. This approach minimizes tissue trauma and promotes faster recovery.
This procedure is indicated when medical treatment fails to resolve pulmonary abscesses or when recurrent infections occur in congenital or acquired cysts. These lesions may cause symptoms such as chronic cough, fever, or hemoptysis, and pose a risk of rupture or persistent infection. Surgical removal is often necessary to prevent complications like sepsis, bleeding, or progressive lung damage.
The lesion’s location is identified using imaging studies before surgery. During VATS, the surgeon carefully isolates and removes the cyst or abscess while preserving as much healthy lung tissue as possible. In cases of active infection, the cavity is irrigated, and a chest tube is inserted for drainage. Care is taken to avoid air leaks and injury to surrounding vital structures.
After surgery, a chest tube remains in place for several days to drain fluids and allow the lung to re-expand fully. Imaging is performed to monitor recovery, and antibiotics or respiratory physiotherapy may be continued based on the case. Most patients experience significant symptom relief and a quick return to normal activities following successful removal.
